Notes

Jason Reblando (United States, b. 1973), Mention the Geographic, 2023

In his project titled Field Notes, Jason Reblando creates collages with imagery he finds in archives that were made by American colonizers in the Philippines during their occupation in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. He states: “By physically cutting, pasting, and rearranging various elements of images upon images, I aim to deconstruct and critique the colonial gaze, while attempting to reclaim the photographic narrative…Ultimately, I hope that my project will contribute to a growing conversation by contemporary artists who are eager to interrogate the colonizing power of the archive, not only for Filipinos, but for all members of the Global South.”

Jason Reblando received his MFA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago (2010) and a BA in Sociology from Boston College. He is the recipient of a U.S. Fulbright Fellowship to the Philippines and two Artist Fellowship Awards from the Illinois Arts Council. His photographs are held in the collections of the Library of Congress, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Pennsylvania State University Special Collections, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others. He is an Assistant Professor of Photography in the Wonsook Kim School of Art at Illinois State University. Field Notes will be published by For the Birds Trapped in Airports in 2024.
