John Opera (United States, b. 1975) Untitled, 2022
John Opera is interested in emphasizing the relationship between photography’s surface qualities and its qualities as illusionistic and indexical space. Using a variety of experimental processes incorporating plant life, Opera makes reference to the inherent relationship between liquid chemical reactions inside the natural world and their connected activity that brings a photographic image into being. This piece is on stretched canvas and made with pigment and gum Arabic, which is extracted from wild trees.
John Opera has been featured in numerous exhibitions such as at DOCUMENT, IL (2023); Higher Pictures, NY (2015); DePaul Art Museum, Chicago (2013); and the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (2011). His work is held in the permanent collections of the DePaul Museum of Art; the Burchfield-Penney Art Center, NY; and the MoCP, among others.
