24 x 31 cm.
Created in 2018

The Island Series was inspired by the artist's travels through Cornwall and the Outer Hebrides.

The series focused on the barns and outbuildings the artist chanced upon. The simple structures drew a parallel with Philip's love of geometric form and compositional values.

In Coastal Barn, combinations of the sea's horizon, the verticals of the barn and the raking sunlight produce multiple geometric planes. In the artist's iconic style, the surface of the painting has been worn and worked on to evoke a sense of the condition where the barn has been exposed to the elements.

Standing alone in the landscape, the barn as a subject brings both a comfort and isolation when we consider the shelter it might offer alongside the remoteness of its location.
