Notes

About

I am an artist who likes to cross discipline boundaries, moving fluidly between pattern cutting, jewellery & metal work, embroidery, and, fine art.

I visualize my thoughts, emotions, and observations through freehand machine embroidery. I was introduced to this medium by my Aunt when I was 15 and instantly felt a connection.

Photography has always been a key element in my work, and it is often an inspiration and starting point for an embroidery. Life drawing classes are also an important component in my work, observing the human form and the spirit and energy that is projected from a person.

Throughout the process of looking and laying down the charcoal marks, I work in anticipation of the final stitches, that way the story unfolds with controlled energy.

I see a parallel between analog photography and the process of freehand embroidering with a domestic sewing machine. It is a blend of skillful purpose with an element of chance and accident.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artworks

These postcards are based on a previous body of work which responded to the concept of a self-portrait.

'Can One Ever Be A Good Mother And A Great Artist?’ was a question I asked myself again and again when bringing up my children. As we played games and puzzles to stretch their minds, I was probing my own experiences for answers to this question. The pin holes are stitches without thread.

'I Am A Spiritual Person' is in part reference to when the Ancient Greeks were first experimenting with distilling wine to reach spiritual enlightenment. I stitched the Gallbladder Meridian using the colour for the Solar Plexus, yellow. The gallbladder works closely with it’s twin organ the Liver. It is the Meridian responsible for choosing between options, good judgment and decision making.
