Rebuilding Beirut with Pride (9/31)

Notes

Alia Hamaoui’s multidisciplinary practice weaves together layered fragments, muted tones and lost histories. A combination of print, painting and ‘construction’; Hamaoui’s work embodies a shift from physical remnants of the past to the digitising of memories. Her practice explores how images, both printed and digitised are intercepting our perspective on historical narratives and the perception of the ‘exotic’. She is specifically interested in the ‘exotic’ in connection to the depiction of the Middle East and often explores historical or contemporary moments where the East and the West intersect in order to further understand her perspective as a mixed heritage person. She is interested in cultural spaces that we use to escape our everyday and thinks of them as self-explorational spaces, where people try to identify or link themselves to some form of their own cultural identity.

Alia Hamaoui (b.1996) is a British/Lebanese artist based in London. Her practice combines sculpture, image-making and painting. Hamaoui received her BA (Hons) Painting from Camberwell College of Arts in 2018. Recent solo exhibitions include Scaled Reiterations, DKUK, April-June 2021, London UK. Recent group exhibitions include Doubling Down, Leicester Contemporary, curated by Castor Projects, 17 September - 9 October 2021, Leicester, UK; and Take Care, 3+1 Arte Contemporanea, Curated by PADA Studios, 5 August- 11 September 2021, Lisbon, Portugal. She is a resident and founding member of Collective Ending.
