Rhythm in Blue represents an inflection point in my work from a couple years ago, when the work became increasingly formal and ordered, while conveying ideas about sound and light that are anything but rational to me. My work is done by painting in broad areas of the dominant colours and then refining the colour harmony and modulating it using ever-thinner bands of paint. The craft of painting is very important to me, but in works like Rhythm in Blue, I wanted to supress any trace painterliness. This has been a theme in my work; creating a unique art object that also feels as though it could have been created using modern technology.
