The Crossover Project (10/43)

Notes

This unique artwork is part of The Crossover Project collection, made from waste and surplus materials and contains precious gemstones. It is sold framed in a light oak tray frame.

About the artwork
NOT UR DUMPING GROUND” is a reaction to the pollution damage of other countries caused by the UK's plastic waste problem. It is a loud scream from people who are tired of being forced to live in areas where the UK's waste and recycling is dumped. The UK is one of the biggest producers of plastic waste in the WORLD second to the US. Since 2021, because of Brexit, Britain created a loophole in the law which allowed them to continue shipping over 7133 metric tonnes of waste and recycled goods to non “OECD” countries including Malaysia, Pakistan, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Turkey— despite the EU banning unsorted plastic waste being shipped to non-OECD countries.

This piece is a reminder that there are many people who aren't represented in the "green space" and suffer the consequences of significant decisions affecting the environment daily. The gems represent the value of marginalised voices in the green space that often go unheard. Through her unique messy, brash, and disruptive style, Nicole Chui encourages the viewer to be more empathetic towards the way we talk and treat our environment as a whole beyond just a piece of plastic.

About the Crossover Project
For the first time at such a scale, The Crossover Project brings together the worlds of art, design and fashion in a bid to tackle waste within the creative industries. With 1.6m tonnes of furniture and bulky waste ending in landfill each year in the UK, the project aims to salvage waste from the design and fashion sectors and present it to an exciting roster of talented emerging artists represented by avant-garde gallery Bleur to create unique works of art using art as a force for change to raise awareness around the need for circularity of materials to tackle waste. The collection of works will be exhibited in an immersive exhibition at The Royal Exchange in London from 23rd June until 8th July. Partner brands include Diesel, Ron Dorff, Georg Jensen, Elle Decoration and Edward Bulmer and others.
