I had this still life set up for quite a few days before I began painting. I would look at it and think about what might need to change. I had lots of other things I needed to do so couldn’t paint, but I guess I was painting in my head, a bit. Ultimately, the objects on the right side were substituted and I moved things around. That meant that I didn’t have to make any changes to things while painting. I love when that happens when I have figured out the composition COMPLETELY before I begin.
Most of the objects are new and came from the Needham market car boot sale. I bought them last weekend. The Spanish figure, a bottle of alcohol, was my treasure and it only set me back by a couple of quid. The standing cigarette tin was completely rusted but I shined it up with steel wool and some beeswax. The cloth came from some newly purchased discontinued wallpaper/fabric books from Heather’s in Stowmarket.

Notes
Daughter of a textile artist, I am obsessed with pattern and colour. I collect stuff that might inspire me and use the things I assemble to tell stories that might be true. Egg tempera allows me to layer colour, to find edges make different kinds of marks. It also dries quickly and that suits my temperament.
