Notes

Fabio Almeida creates playful, collages using a variety of materials including vintage papers, spray paint, markers, bleach and letraset transfers.

Fabio's dynamic compositions draw heavily from the realms of architecture and design, specially the legacy of the Modernist movement so prevalent in his native South America during the immediate post-war period. The aesthetics of architects and designers such as Oscar Niemeyer, Lina Bo Bardi and Roberto Burle Marx form the building blocks of Almeida's visual language. But his isn't a nostalgic revival of the optimist and order pursued by that generation, his work is laced with a layer of realism and current preoccupations of present day, specially those related to life in large urban areas and the age of information.

A tension is created between the elegant, ordered language of geometric abstraction and the materiality of the surface – the scribbled and tarnished layers of paper suggesting more mundane and fragile aspects of life.
