Notes

Lenny Lane creates multi-coloured lino prints from a single block using the reduction technique. Lenny developed this unusual technique 30 years ago whilst at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Dundee.

He says, "I discovered a natural connection with the hands-on nature of linoleum carving. The subsequent variations of mark making that came through using Pfeil and other cutting tools, along with taking hold of Columbian and Albion presses, was like a new world to me.

With a couple of basic prints under my belt, I made the decision to see how far I could go using the reduction technique (applying multiple layers of colour using one block). The studio gave me the space and the teaching gave me the guidance to push my limits. Undeterred I'd attempt prints using 30+ layers of colour to find the images I was after. There are always surprises, unexpected delights, failures and new knowledge to be gained through these projects. Simple two- and three-colour prints were also undertaken. But I enjoyed the challenge and discipline of going where my contemporaries didn't.

Over 30 years later I still get a thrill and excitement with the possibilities of creating new lino prints. Some small and some very large, mostly colour, and always created in limited editions." - Lenny Lane
