Notes
Alongside his focus on current art practices and an in depth appreciation of sculpture and its traditions, the Glasgow based sculptor, Alex Allan absorbs research material from experiencing the environment around him. That is to say his identity as an artist is constructed not only through his engagement with the 'art world', but by his observance and understanding of the physical realities of urban life at this point in history.
Historical themes of political power, civic identity and town planning are examined through a contemporary lens of the artist where elements of research and play coexist. These themes are inherent in his work and are amplified to bring a deeper meaning from his sculpture, sculpture that on the surface looks quite simple. Overall his output as an artist seems to talk not only to the city outside but to react to, and challenge, the monumental traditions of both Ancient and Modern Sculpture and the themes they have addressed throughout history.
Following on from the artist's focus on our every day surroundings, Pool is a tight-knit 'desk work' by the artist that has evolved from an interest in town-planning and the ways in which people are told to navigate their environments. Not only are they preparatory works for the artist's future sculptures and public interventions, but they are a way for the sculptor to enjoy the solitude of the studio.
