Abstract: Reality
EndedPhotorealism meets abstraction
In collaboration with the Saatchi Gallery, The Auction Collective and Presenza presented Abstract: Reality, an exhibition and auction of artwork from 49 contemporary artists that brought together the two extremes of subject: the bold colours and disconnected lines of abstract art, and the fine details and precise representation of photorealist art.
Questions about the meaning and necessity of both abstraction and photo-realism have formed some of the central debates on Modern Art in the last 150 years. Abstract art was laughed out of the early 20th century Salons and Academies, and then later when Abstract Expressionism flourished, figuration took its turn to be shunned by the most accomplished artists of the 1940s and 1950s. Abstract: Reality looked at the various strands of this conversation in contemporary art and the concept of 'representation’, which acknowledges that abstract and figurative art are not as different as they might seem.
As usual, to make buying art more affordable, there was no buyer's commission and the exhibition and auction were open to everyone. Just under 300 people joined us at the gallery with international bidders and buyers dialing on on the phones and leaving absentee bids. It was a tremendous success with much competitive bidding, we are so grateful for everyone that took part.
