Aleph Contemporary for AccessArt
19 NOVEMBER 2021 - 17 DECEMBER 2021Notes
The last time I used gouache I was travelling through India and Nepal on a Royal Overseas League Travel Bursary over 20 years ago. This is like returning to an old friend and rediscovering the delights of rich and fluid colours such as Bengal Rose and Opera Pink. This work was created in my lockdown shed studio surrounded by the South Downs where I walked and experienced the phenomena and spectacle of the day.
The Baron attempts to make raw and visceral works. Painting for me is a visual experience of what paint can do, in the doing is the knowing. I paint wet into wet employing automatism as the works are made manifest rendered through one gestural decision leading to another. Layers are built up as the works are twisted and turned until images reveal a cliff edge or an imagined space. References can include Medieval Northern European painting, cave paintings of Lascaux and Outsider Art.
