Notes

Hanselaar says of the work, ‘Made during last year’s lockdown, by the end of it my imagination overtook the non happenings of daily life. I was clearing some old prints in my studio and when I was ripping them up I liked the bits and gathered some of them to make new images with.’

Marcelle Hanselaar is a well known painter and printmaker. She looks for ways to express those illusive questions of who and what we are when the mask is off. Both her paintings and her prints display her delight and fascination with theatrical illusions and although often peppered with a biting sense of humour, the works reveals her own vibrant understanding of human nature, in all its animosity and fragility.

Born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands in 1945.
Lives and works in London.
Studied: 1962-1964 Royal Academy of Arts, The Hague.
