04 NOVEMBER 2023 - 25 NOVEMBER 20231. David Powell
Lay of the Land 2019
A mixed media visualisation of the Fall's track of the same name. Multi-media: watercolour, pen and digital on paper.
From the artist:
'The title refers to the track ‘Lay of the Land’ by the post-punk Manchester group The Fall; the song was included on their 1984 album, 'The Wonderful and Frightening World of The Fall.' It was the first track I ever heard from this group, and it astonished me. The Fall collaborated with the dancer/choreographer Michael Clark on a televised set on The Old Grey Whistle Test, where Clark and his dancers performed to the Lay of the Land, the dancers wore revealing costumes where the backside seat of their leggings was cut out.'

Since 2018, David Powell has been making work about the British alternative music scene. Powell's lifelong fascination with alternative bands and their legacies has more or less defined his practice. His paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and zines refer to fandom, collective identification and the material object.
Powell's work explores collective memory at its core while embracing social dynamics that strive to bring different audiences together.
David Powell is interested in working with people from different culturally creative spheres, emphasising inclusivity and new forms of collaboration. He is seeking new exchanges and reflections on music, literature and art.
