Martin Brown is an Australian-born, London-based artist (Australian/British) whose
paintings deal primarily with the built environment, especially urban spaces. Drawing
on the history of painting in the Western tradition, to explore ideas of memory and
perception as they relate to the architecture and topography of modern cities.
Through the employment and layering of different painterly styles and techniques,
producing work that reveals the traces of the past in the present moment, forming
visual ‘timelines’ in a single picture.
The Artwork featured is a watercolour, ink and graphite study for the larger oil
painting titled “The Boston, Tufnell Park” which was previously exhibited in the
Exhibition Displacement in Paris 2016. The Artwork “The Boston, Tufnell Park,
study” was made in preparation for the larger work, it is a scene of an intersection
near where the artist lives in North London. The work was made “en plein air” and
has not previously been exhibited.
After a formative period of exhibiting extensively in Australia from the mid 90’s,
Martin relocated to London in 2003. Since then, he has had solo shows in London,
Basel, Paris and most recently a solo exhibition in Venice. He is currently based in
London and Northern Italy.
