Notes
Lemonade Bleach is a self-portrait, I think, at least in spirit. The subject reads about the Lotus Eaters from the Odysseus myth, and he’s fallen asleep at sunset. You know those late summer evenings, where the sun hangs low and the sky is the colour of pink lemonade… that fleeting sensation. That’s the sensation I wanted to capture.
Andrew Salgado’s paintings have evolved greatly in style since first rising to prominence over half a decade ago. His more recent works play with ideas of excess and colour and are far less serious than his previous offerings.
Today, Salgado’s subjects are depicted in fantastical, often ominous tableaux: harlequin-like figures, wisps of mysterious smoke, low-hanging moons, and the remnants from a Bohemian celebration are current motifs. The works are celebratory and theatrical, with references often made to the tradition of figurative painting both historic and contemporary: from Matisse, Gauguin, and Bacon to Tal R, Daniel Richter, and Peter Doig.
