Art For Relief
05 MARCH 2021 - 26 MARCH 2021Notes
“Hope portrays an angelic figure surrounded by a horde of peculiar stars and illuminated by an arch window. This piece ultimately is my personal depiction of hope.” - Phoebe McMullan, 2021
Iconography and imagery drawn from a range of sources. Transformation is the key, manipulating images out of their original context to create strange and personal scenarios. McMullan plays with ideas of romanticism and the mythological with each character providing a glimpse into a moment in time or a thought. Each piece is part of a larger, more enigmatic world as she paints as a direct form of escapism, emphasising the surreal and camp . Her recent preoccupations include sleep, dreams, reflections and masks. The natural fluidity of watercolour is utilised to create something sporadic, saturating areas with water and colour to allow the paint to create its own unique areas. A difficult medium to master, the natural transparency of the watercolour provides a dreamlike finish and a natural ethereal quality.
