Notes

"My work is about the practice of painting, with the aim to create paintings that offer a certain resistance to traditional ideas of genius, whilst also portraying a sense of a feminised art practice. The works involve energetic and playful explorations of colour, form and the process of making and are grounded in the practice of drawing.

The paintings reference the methods of artists such as Georg Baselitz and Willem de Kooning, yet they seek to interrogate and reclaim the language of gestural painting in a contemporary context. My subject matter orbits current debates within gender politics and references classical painting and sculpture. The bodies in my work are never whole; they are always disrupted in some way. In each work I strive to achieve a certain awkwardness that arises from the conflict between an impulse for defiance and a desire for beauty."  - Kim Booker, 2021
