Notes

- Monika Chlebek

‘The work is a study for a painting I made called “The Great Ass”. It was meant to be a contradiction to the seriousness of most of the subject-matter one comes across in art. Ass, bum, butt - one the one hand, it can be seen as an offensive gesture, or, as the word ‘ass’ can used in the Polish language, a signifier for the hopelessness of a situation; on the other, the butt can be a humorous touch. You can read it literally, as an anatomical illustration, a body part we tend to hide, or as a powerful statement of personal opinion. The light, pastel colours add a layer of subtlety to our titular ‘ass’, stripping it of any hints of vulgarity.' - Monika Chlebek
