Notes

My paintings begin as a dialogue, both with a particular Folk Tale and also with an image from art history – often a painting by an Old Master that may then be used as a starting point from which to playfully but reverently deviate. I am interested in how stories are retold and re-imagined, and how the retelling alters and embellishes the original even as it seeks to render it vital and alive once again for a new audience.’ – Iain Andrews

Iain Andrews is a British painter currently based in Manchester, where he is the artist in residence and Art Psychotherapist at Trinity High School. He is a member of Contemporary British Painting Society and has exhibited widely in the UK, the USA and in China. His works were presented at the Venice Biennale in 2019, and in 2009, he participated in a duo show alongside Genieve Figgis at Queen Street Studios in Belfast. In 2011, Andrew was awarded the Marmite Prize for Painting III for his work The East Me.

Prophet in the Garden is part of a series of works that look at the role of the Prophet and the Outsider in contemporary culture.
