Notes

‘Who do we see when we look in the mirror? A monster? A shadow? Who do we want to see? And how much does this person in the mirror really resemble what we are?’ These are all questions that have inspired Makukh in her creation of this work. Reflection provokes its viewer to question whether the way they see themselves is representative of the way that they are seen by others. The work is a witty exercise in voyeurism, where we as viewers look at the figure looking at themselves. It is not one reflection, but many.

Through painting Yana Makuh portrays her personal experiences and attempts to capture her moods at different moments in the creative process. Her interests in Suprematism and Dadaism strongly inform her work but as an artist, she is most inspired by the great avant-garde Ukrainian artist, Kazimir Malevich. Whilst still experimenting with different styles, Makuh strives to break away from reality and eventually hopes to reach a new level of complete abstraction.

Yana Makuh studied Decorative and Applied Arts at the College of Culture and Arts, Mykolaiv and is currently studying painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw.
