‘These small abstracts are an experiment in colour and spontaneous gesture. They plan and inform my larger figurative works and capture a fleeting moment on a surface which is painted onto and rubbed away again and again.’ – Lily MacRae
Lily MacRae’s work is concerned just as much with what is absent, missing or removed from the canvas as with the marks and traces left behind. Reappropriating imagery from a variety of sources, from film-stills to Old Master paintings and Baroque masterpieces, her work reimagines their narratives through a contemporary lens. MacRae is fascinated by the way in which stories embedded in such canonical paintings can be reinterpreted today, forging a dialogue between past and present modes of representation.
Lily Macrae is an artist based in Glasgow. She graduated from the Edinburgh College of Art in 2016, where her massively successful Degree Show was a sell out. In 2019, she was awarded the Hope Scott Trust Fund and The Great Britain Sasakawa Emerging Artist Grant, thanks to which she completed a month-long residency with 3331 Arts Chiyoda in Tokyo, Japan. MacRae has exhibited widely across Scotland, England and Japan.
