Renee explores themes of race, sexuality, gender and personal pain through portraiture, and abstract dream landscapes incorporating elements emblematic of the past with hope for the future. Her body of work is primarily watercolor and mixed media on wood. 

This piece is based on the continual struggle of women of color in South America, particularly the treatment of Afro-Colombian women in Colombia. Thematically it is parallel to the ongoing struggle of women of color.
