About

Since graduating in 1990, I have been fortunate to have had almost 50 gallery solo exhibitions to date, mainly in London, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Recent shows also include Dubai, New York and Denmark. A number of Ltd Edition prints have been published in Japan and the UK. In 2011 I was entered in to The Dictionary of Scottish Painters: 1600 to the Present. I have been an invited artist to the Discerning Eye Exhibition, Mall Galleries in 2016 and 2017. And I'm delighted to have been elected an artist member of the Chelsea Arts Club in 2004! I am a Scottish painter, drilled in the tradition of the Colourists and still influenced by more contemporary artists such as Sir Robin Philipson and Joan Eardley. Shapes and colours in the landscape are also a huge inspiration. I have spent the last twenty or so years living on the Sussex coast and regularly spending time on the west coast of Scotland. My paintings are carefully but energetically built up on the canvas in impasto layers. Never working from life, I relish the liberation of creating something from an idea and my own recollection. The work is primarily about colour: not simplistic or sweet, but with an emphasis on conveying mood and space in the composition - and finding those unexpected combinations that give a landscape or flower its own personality. Above all, I want my work to be uplifting – people often have an immediate, visceral response to art, and if that can be a joyful one, then that is what I am aiming for.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

On this small scale, I wanted to convey the feeling of positivity: that despite the unsettling times we are living in there can be a brighter future ahead. Many of us are continuing to support inclusivity and equality for women, fight disease and lessen our contribution to global warming. By raising awareness and encouraging more action I believe there is more hope than despair.
