About

Emiko Aida is a printmaker, painter and mixed media artist living in London. She was born in a town with a Japanese temple dedicated to the Water God in Tokyo. Water is worshipped there, and growing up, bushes, botanical gardens, wetlands, streams, and rivers surrounded her. Her family took Buddhism teaching and had a small temple at home next to a miniature Shinto shrine. Bell sounds from a nearby Christian monastery and the Buddhist temple were her daily clock. She finds nature to be the element she most strongly connects to, both spiritually and emotionally.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

I have created three oil paintings on board, connecting with the same theme as my oil on canvas creations. Nature inspires me. The Magnolia flowers have often appeared in my work over the past few years. In Japan, Magnolia flower is called Lotus on Wood. Lotus is a sacred flower, so Magnolia shares this sacredness. I combined the flower and light in my work. Both possess the power to illuminate minds and lift the human spirit. We are currently facing large changes and difficulties. Under these circumstances I hope my work contributes to the radiance that guides us forward.
