About

After graduating from Central Saint Martin’s with a 1st class BA Hons and The Royal Drawing School’s Drawing Year, Lily studied an MA in Fine Art at City & Guilds of London Art School, graduating in 2022. Lily is a painter whose works lie in a twilight space – one foot in this world and one in another, one in the past and one in the present – and are drawn from memories, emotions and the everyday. Desire is a central theme, which Lily explores through surreal situations. These are by turns tender, brutal, humorous and melancholic. Happiness hand in hand with a shadow of destruction. Objects are charged with symbolism. Her characters hold tight to their longings, blowing dandelion wishes in transporting imaginative spaces as an attempt to satisfy their desires.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

These four little postcard drawings tell the story of Wafer Boy, a recurring character in my work created out of my attempt to embody objects that trigger memories. Desire is a key theme in my work. Wafer boy is searching for his desires, making a wish by blowing dandelions into the wind. Wafer Boy is full of lust in drawing two, ‘Sexy time’ and his desires are fulfilled. In drawing three, we see Wafer Boy giving birth and in drawing four we see Wafer Boy and child both making a wish together. These drawings are autobiographical and cathartic, helping me understand the waves of my emotions as I prepare to embark on my journey of motherhood.
