About

Takeisha Jefferson is a Michigan native, a seasoned portrait photographer, and an artist with a long-standing interest in the medium. After receiving her first camera at the age of nine, she pursued self-directed study in photography and later utilized her skills as a military journalist.

Following her time in the Air Force, Takeisha established a successful portrait photography business. In pursuit of further artistic development, she enrolled in a Fine Arts program at Auburn University in Montgomery, Alabama, where she expanded upon her Birthright Series and discovered a passion for art history.

Jefferson has participated in over 30 exhibitions globally, including four solo shows, and has been recognized for her work through a feature on Google Arts and Culture and a nomination for the Lecia Oskar Barnack Award. Her subjects frequently include her family, but her oeuvre also touches on themes of black womanhood and empowerment. As a disabled veteran, wife, and mother of four, Jefferson brings a wealth of life experience and insight to her art practice.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artworks

"Fortitude" is a powerful ode to the strength and resilience of African women, painted in bold and vibrant acrylics that create a sense of energy and movement. The abstract sunrise setting serves as an evocative metaphor for the dawning of a new day, offering hope for what lies ahead. The presence of the women carrying their load on their heads speaks to the daily challenges and struggles they face, while also expressing a deeper emotion of strength, perseverance, and courage. In this piece, I seek to capture not only the physical resilience of African women but also their emotional and mental fortitude — a tribute to their indomitable spirit in the face of adversity. It is my hope that it will inspire viewers to recognize and celebrate the power of these remarkable women.

"Inkwell Symphony" is an abstract art piece created using nothing but black acrylic paint and a pen. By combining smooth curves with stark angles, light and shadow, positive and negative space, this piece evokes a sense of movement and energy that celebrates the power and beauty of the line. The presence of black ink symbolizes something beyond what is seen on the surface – a representation of the unknown, void, infinite, as well as a suggestion of depth and dimension. The artist seeks to capture not only physical forms but also emotion and movement in this work - allowing anyone who views it to explore their own responses through contemplation. Through its bold yet delicate lines, "Inkwell Symphony" reminds us to embrace harmony and balance between emotionality, symbolism, creativity, strength and resilience in our lives. In doing so, it speaks not only to our visual senses but also our emotional ones - celebrating human resilience amidst adversity.

"Whispered Harmonies" is an abstract art piece in which I explore the ethereal and ephemeral nature of color and form. Through a soft pastel palette, bold gestural lines, and various abstract forms, this piece conveys a sense of harmony, movement and energy. By combining smooth curves with stark angles, light and shadow, positive and negative space, this artwork evokes a dreamlike nostalgia - seeking to capture not only physical forms but also emotion through the use of color. Through "Whispered Harmonies", I seek to capture something beyond what is seen on the surface - an invitation for viewers to explore their own responses through contemplation. It strives towards aesthetic beauty while encouraging viewers to look beyond form and appreciate its underlying beauty: harmony between emotionality, symbolism, creativity, strength, resilience, and ultimately embracing impermanence in our lives with grace.
