Notes

About

Contemporary artist Poppy Lennox creates unique works on paper and wood that visualise the laws of nature and explore the interconnectivity of life. Using a mix of gold leaf, paint and embroidery she plays with the contrast between the delicacy of woven threads through their hard wooden ‘canvas’ with the vivid, bold and exotic fauna that predominate her pieces. Vibrant colours permeate abstract figures, creating a fantastical quality that oscillates between the real and imaginary.

As if following traditional forms of embroidery, Poppy is drawn to symmetry and repetition. Threading each piece can take Poppy many hours, a process that allows her to enter an almost meditative state and get lost in the repetition of pattern. The titles of her works help the viewer understand the importance of this meditative dimension in her working process: they allude to a kind of pursuit of ascension, self-liberation or, perhaps, refuge. In this sense, Poppy embraces spirituality in her work and follows a long tradition of artists who have used their art as an aid to look for transcendence and subject matters that go beyond a physical level.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artworks

Symmetry and repetition feature in much of Poppy's work. Threading each piece can take many hours, a process that allows Poppy to enter an almost meditative state and get lost in the repetition of pattern. This miniature version of a larger embroidered piece on wood looks at life as vibration, ripples of energy; constantly moving, shifting and evolving in waves.
