Statement about AOAP Submitted Artworks

This work details a woman with a snake. A snake is a symbol for change and metamorphosis and is inextricably linked to the idea of woman as the originator of sin. In Ancient Iconography this was brought home by the serpent mirroring Eve, as Eve listened to the Serpent and gave Adam fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil which resulted in Adam and Eve being cast out of the Garden of Eden. This work explores the inextricable link between womanhood and shame as well as women sharing the magical healing and transformative qualities of the snake.

Mother Nature is the embodiment of the relationship between the elements of the natural world. She embraces plants and animals, the sea and the sky, the non-human and the human. As we advance into the Anthropocene, she reminds us of our roots in the earth, our bodies of water, our reciprocal breaths. She reminds us of our human nature, our veins and their lazy rivers, that we are part of the natural world.
