Art on a Postcard International Women’s Day Auction - Curated by Louise Fitzjohn
23 FEBRUARY 2023 - 09 MARCH 2023Notes
About
I am a Margate based multidisciplinary artist, with a strong focus on large scale paintings, both indoors and outside. The work can be described as both figurative and socially surreal. I also work with sound and moving image in a collage type of way, connecting footage/sound at random.
Most of my inspiration comes from the events of everyday life, of symbolism and rituals and the people I meet. Often complex layers of history, social anthropology and Cultural displacement become part of the work, as I investigate the notion of the constructed self and human behaviour. Being of Welsh, Caribbean and Irish descent, I am deeply rooted in hybrid culture, and the idea of a shared reality.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artworks
I have quite a varied practise and wanted to show this in the work Submitted for the Auction. I have been developing a series of work in response to the ecstatic vs still responses to Open water swimming here in Margate, reducing the Palette and detail within these works to present different emotions and responses. Another body of work I have been developing is in response to Afro Hair products and notions of Nostalgia/BlackBrown Joy. The Work "Leave Them Fro's Alone" Follows on from this series and is a direct response to more recent events in Schools in the Uk, where schools are being warned not to exclude pupils for wearing their hair in Natural afro styles. This work is a sketch painting for a Print I want to release this year.
You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. In doing so, you endanger our relationships with artists, and directly jeopardise the charitable work we do. Anyone found doing so will be subject to legal action.
