About
Contemporary artist Poppy Lennox works with paint and embroidery to create works into wood that look to nature’s systems, patterns and life’s interconnectivity. Her intricately embroidered pieces explore humanity’s physical and spiritual connection to our environment; the relationship to place and to the space around us, both on a near physical level and in the wider astral plane. Poppy sees the layering and revealing of painterly textures as well as the repetition of woven thread through the hard surface of each wooden canvas as a way of grounding and connecting the energetic, vibrational forces that surround every aspect of our existence.
As if following traditional forms of embroidery, Poppy is drawn to symmetry and repetition. Threading each piece can take hundreds of hours, a process that allows her to enter an almost meditative state. The titles of her works help the viewer understand the importance of this meditative dimension in her process: they allude to a kind of pursuit of ascension, self-liberation or perhaps, refuge. In this sense, Poppy embraces spirituality in her work and follows a long tradition of artists who have used their art as an aid to look for transcendence and subject matters that go beyond a physical level.
Since transitioning from her previous career as a project manager to museums and curators, Poppy’s work has been shown in a number of exhibitions, private members’ clubs and art fairs including 99 Projects, London, The Savoy, Home House and The Other Art Fair. She has sold to collectors in the UK, US, Singapore and Middle East and has work in the collection of renowned London wine merchant Berry Bros & Rudd for whom she created a limited-edition artists’ label. Poppy has worked with arts mental health charities Hospital Rooms and A Space Between to deliver on-line and in person workshops and has exhibited with Art on a Postcard and Art for Charity Collective on various exhibitions. Her work was included in a charity art auction at Christie’s alongside artists such as David Shrigley, Rob & Nick Carter and Zak Ové.
