Often but not always my paintings start with an aesthetic fascination for some sculptures, sketches or paintings of the renaissance or baroque times. In the series of entanglamentos, for example, I began on the canvas with sketches of paintings by Rubens, Caravaggio, and Tizian, which are connected by topic, composition, and color. And then the playing with composition starts which, in these paintings, led to a kind of reduction or dramatization of some basic elements in the originals. It is accompanied by the playing with color, building up the body of paint layer by layer until a certain intensity is reached. And then there is the playing with the figures and their relation to each other. Here too, a certain equilibrium of complexity and simplicity should be reached which brings the cognitive and emotional aspects to oscillate in strange and interesting ways.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork   

In case of the works elegy in joy and the flesh and the answer I started with a fast sketch on Linoleum. Then I painted over the print with oil colors. There is an open series of these paintings on paper. And the preoccupation with the spontaneously emerged motives led to oil paintings on canvas, too. There is one canvas of each motive at the moment. To be continued…
