Art on a Postcard Winter Auction, Lots 201-300
04 NOVEMBER 2021 - 25 NOVEMBER 2021Notes
About
After a long career in the visual arts as a graphic designer, illustrator and lecturer I decided to make more time for my figurative art.
Since I was at college in the early 1980s I have attended, or run, regular life drawing sessions at various times working in graphite, watercolour, pastels or coloured pencils. My drawings are in soluble graphite over-painted with watercolours on handmade paper. I also make pastel drawings on A3 cartridge paper.
I began painting more conventional portraits in oils about six years ago and am constantly developing my style and looking for new ways of seeing. At the start of the first Lockdown (in the UK, the 17th March 2020) I began a project that involved painting nineteen portraits for exhibition at the end of the restrictions. I completed the set in twelve weeks and began taking commissions online.
I am now diversifying into landscape painting.
Education
I continued to draw and paint throughout school, passing Art and Engineering drawing A levels. After a year-long Art Foundation Course in 1982, I followed on to Technical Illustration. The course had a necessarily wide ranging skills based approach which included analytical drawing and life drawing sessions alongside the more technical disciplines.
On completion I worked as a designer/illustrator for an advertising agency and was employed as a part time lecturer in analytical drawing and late as a life drawing tutor on the Foundation course. I then completed both FETC and PGCE teaching qualifications.
I re-trained as a Graphic Designer gaining my BA (Hons) in 1997 and I have been running my own design company ever since. In 2011 I returned to education to complete an MA in Visual Communication.
Select Exhibitions/Awards
I recently had one of the portraits painted during lockdown accepted for the Royal Society of Portrait Painters annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London.
Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork
I have provided a set of life drawings from some online Zoom groups I attend two or three times a week. It was a challenge to scale my work down to postcard size but I enjoyed the process.
