Art on a Postcard x War Child UK 2024 Part I
23 APRIL 2024 - 07 MAY 2024Notes
About
I am a figurative painter based in Brighton, painting mainly from life. I am drawn to the more expressive side of painting, whilst trying to be truthful to what I see before me. My work frequently has a personal connection to my life and I often paint the people and places that are important to me. I love the process of painting, the texture and colours of oil paint and the technical challenge of painting with it. I want the work I produce to have a truthfulness about it, and resonate with other people.
Education
Kingston University, Hons degree Fine Art Painting 1990
Select Exhibitions/Awards
Recent exhibitions include the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Society of Women Artists, Worthing Museum and Art Gallery and the Sussex Contemporary
I am longlisted for the Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award 2024 at the National Portrait Gallery.
Gallery Representation
I don't have gallery representation currently, but sell through an annual Artists Open House in Brighton.
Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork
I choose to paint still life for the postcards, double priming before painting with oil paint and varnishing. These objects have been featured in other paintings and I enjoy using the same source material in a number of works. These objects have meaning for me as they belong to important family members and represent significant times in my life. I painted the works from life over a number of sessions using large brushes to retain a loose painterly feel
