About
Rosanna Dean is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in London. She is artist associate at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies where she is developing and sharing ideas around Foundational cultural stories, ritual, and women's roles within these fields with Professors and Researchers from Oxford University and academics from around the world. Rosanna looks to imagery from foundational cultural stories and reconfigures them, interrogating notions of authorship, gender and the perspectives through which history has been constructed. Her compositions are often influence by her study of patterns in nature that reflect invisible physical laws that affect and have pull on all matter and its influence on the motifs within spiritual art. The work touches on historic notions of the grotesque, the hierarchy of dualistic thought, and how the feminine has been associated with the grotesque and a need to be controlled and contained, as exemplified in its association with the irrational, distraction-through its association with patterning and beauty-and bodily states of flux.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork
‘Limbo1 and 2’ explore a recurring motif repeated in Rosanna’s paintings, a reconfiguration of a depiction of Eve from a painting from the 1500s. The work explores the way in which female roles have been delineated and the need for creating and disseminating new foundational stories, as a means to facilitating new ways of doing things. The work interrogates historical notions of otherness and dualist thought upon which western culture has been constructed.
‘Other besides you 1 and 2’ explore the patterns a body leaves behind and the meanings which can be interpreted from them. The work focuses on luminosity, care, absence while also exploring the realm of relics, authenticity, and the role of visual artefacts in reinforcing belief systems.
