Notes

Rock is the material backbone to Simon Hitchen's creative explorations and the conceptual focus of his sculptures. Over the years his physical involvement with rock has become increasingly minimal as he combines this most traditional of sculpting materials with more contemporary and technically challenging ones such as clear cast resin, cast stainless steel, mirrors and photography.

He exhibits his sculpture widely and also makes large scale public commission, however, drawing is a key component of his work and acts as a touchstone to the more instinctive side of his practice. His drawings are worked in series, frequently using shadows cast from stones local to his studio environment, and he sets up systems of prescribed rules where his hand becomes an objective tool to create the drawings.
