The artist's note about the work:
"With this series, I am painting in reverse. The canvas is dyed with a dark black or indigo. I then begin bleaching parts of the surface to reveal lighter areas. The process happens slowly, in many layers, as I attempt to encourage an ethereal light into the artwork. Finally I add layers of paint, and occasionally ground gypsum crystals in acrylic medium. The result is hopefully very open and suggestive of a numinous experience. The paintings appear simultaneously as portals and as veils and come from an instinct for a kind of light that I have felt all of my life.
I make these paintings in a kind of instinct-driven experimental play-state. Each layer comes as a suggestion from a feeling I get that is tangible but hard to locate in the normal sense. I feel it in my whole body, like a reverberation. In the process ‘my body’ becomes a much bigger thing, like I’ve been plugged into the mainframe. Even writing it here feels like I’m writing about a process that resists being defined. It would be easier to say that I don’t do anything at all, that the works come by some kind of accidental miracle. Yet, when I look at them they immediately appear so familiar, as if I have seen them before and here they are again, in my studio."
