It's My House!
09 OCTOBER 2022 - 31 OCTOBER 2022Notes
Rebecca Farr was born in Los Angeles but raised in the Pacific Northwest, returning to her hometown where she currently resides. She has exhibited in Los Angeles at Five Car Garage, Klowden Mann, Maiden LA, ForYourArt and PØST, in Seattle at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery, along with presentations at multiple art fairs throughout the United States.
Her most recent solo show CAVE at Five Car Garage concluded November 2021. From 2015-17 she was a faculty artist in the education department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, overseeing multiple public projects. Her recent residencies include Kaus Australis in Rotterdam, Netherlands and Les Laboratories Aubervillers in Paris, France and NADA house on Governors Island, New York.
Rebecca’s paintings rise from the concept of body through philosophical, and historical (mis) understandings. Paint glides between intuitive free mark making and classical impressionism in works that freshly express color line and texture. Her conversation of embodiment and the abstraction of meaning are at times a gritty wrestling match of thick paint and at others, light stokes in search of beauty. Symbols and narratives populate the paintings and function as markers, gathering the collective and the personal in a world in which the divides of mind and body are invited to fall away.
Rebecca Farr was inspired to create the beguiling painting ‘Earth to Shore II’ at the end of 2021, inspired by her hikes around the ancient mountains and forests that surround the town of Ojai, California. She wanted to capture the “vortex” that the town represents, drawing people in, which is evident in the triangular shape that leads you up and into the painting.
The abstracted and intriguing landscape captures beautifully the mystical quality of Ojai’s landscape, whose name is derived from the Chumash word “awhay” meaning “moon.
