Notes
Dave Jordano (United States, b. 1948), 18th Street Bridge, and City Chicago 2017
Dave Jordano is a photographer whose career has spanned over forty years. His urban scenes depict the unlikely beauty of Midwestern cities, from the small storefront churches of Chicago to the people and buildings of Detroit. In 2001, Jordano began to photograph bridges within the Chicago city limits for his series Chicago Bridge Project as a return to making photography of his own after twenty-five years of solely photographing commercial still-life assignments for advertising agencies. Jordano states that the work can be viewed metaphorically as a bridge crossing back to his love for the medium as an art practice after a long hiatus, and pragmatically as a documentation of Chicago’s unique architecture and unparalleled number of movable bridges.
Dave Jordano has been widely exhibited, including at the Chicago Cultural Center, the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, and the Detroit Institute of Arts. His work is held in several permanent collections of the Library of Congress; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit; and the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, among others. He was the recipient of the prestigious AIMIA/AGO Prize for Photography in 2015, Canada's highest award for a photographer.
