Out of the Margins
15 SEPTEMBER 2023 - 06 OCTOBER 2023Notes
“This story really is true. In fact there is nothing in it that did not happen. I always wonder how autobiographical plays are. In this case it is 100% true.”
These are deeply personal annotations on Tonderai Munyevu’s deeply personal play about the two men who loomed large in his life - controversial former president Robert Mugabe and Munyevu’s heavy-drinking, often absent father.
There are notes on the writing process, the performing process, Tonderai’s favourite lines, references he recommends to the reader, personal moments which happened during the making of the play. “This scene is the reason why I am not able to perform this play in Zimbabwe” due to its frank description of gay sex.
And then there are notes that make you burst out loud laughing: “I think we are all glad skinny jeans are no longer a thing”.
