Rebuilding Beirut with Pride
10 OCTOBER 2021 - 30 OCTOBER 2021Notes
Working primarily in ceramics, Edwards explores the relationships between materials, colours and surfaces to create tactile works. She is interested in the material qualities of objects. Her most recent works explore the tension between structure and surface decoration, which has been pushed to its limits in the form of gelatinous, erupting glaze. The work subverts the traditional notion within sculpture of the hierarchy of form over surface decoration, glaze being applied so liberally to the surfaces of her clay constructions that they warp, buckle and ooze. Inspired by architectural and natural forms from her surroundings, the work juxtaposes the synthetic colours of industrially manufactured objects, often incorporating found material - everyday detritus from around the city- with the more earthy tones of the clay, a juxtaposition of artificial and natural, organic and plastic.
Freya Edwards b. 1995 lives and works in London. She graduated from BA Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art in 2017 and completed her first year at the RCA studying MA Ceramics and Glass in 2019/20, taking a leave of absence at the start of the covid-19 pandemic. She has recently been an artist in residence in Vume, Ghana - a village renowned for pottery production. She has been a painter and fabricator for Yinka Shonibare CBE since November 2018.
