27 FEBRUARY 2023 - 17 MARCH 2023Notes
Lily Musker, Contemporary British artist born-
Since graduating from art school in Gloucestershire in 2006 Lily has worked as a full time self employed artist. Whilst studying there she was lucky enough to receive a scholarship to go to the British school in Rome.
Subjects in her paintings vary from portraits, landscapes, still-life, fairy tales, roadside series to hedonistic scenes of raves and all are inspired by looking back to paintings from the old masters. In her portraits she has always kept a series going known as ‘The Purifire series’ where she has made paintings of legendary artists such as Lee Scratch Perry and Daddy Freddy holding a flame. In these the flame represents ’the burning away of bad spirits,’ which Lily believes is a good object for anyone to have hanging on their wall.
Using oil paint as the medium for most of her paintings she is currently making up the exact palettes as used by the French painter Delacroix. A lot of the oil paints she makes up herself and one palette contains up to 52 colours.
Currently also working with gum tempera paints, she is using the same palette as George Romney 18th century portrait painter, and landscape palette used by 19th century French landscape painters.
Drawing is a daily practice and a core to her work, with ideas for paintings and where to take paintings she is working on at the time. Alongside her painting she is currently teaching herself printmaking in the form of lithography and etching where she hopes to bring these drawings into works that stand on their own.
Exhibitions her work has been in are the following-
