Notes
“Origin of Prawnies was originally a research exercise for a commission. I arranged multiple still life compositions to work from, using the prawns both raw and cooked to make sketches and paintings on a diminutive scale.” - Rebecca Kunzi, 2021
Kunzi recalls key moments in her life based on the meals she has eaten, from the traumatic spinach soup she wasn’t allowed to leave as a child to the apple sauce filled Yorkshire puddings her mother made. The interest of food as memories and the scenes and smells these conjure, led to the creation of the #Mealtickets project, in which she paints ingredients and dishes on a miniature scale within a vintage ticket. Studioless and wandering, she carries her watercolour ‘studio’ in her bag, settling at opportune times and places, inviting a public audience. Simple, accessible and covetable, their diminutive size belies their mischievous nature.
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Rebecca Kunzi splits her time between Lincolnshire and London.
