Studio Sale 2023 | Diana Palmer
20 JANUARY 2023 - 07 FEBRUARY 2023Notes
Diana Palmer's art practice explores the relationship between a figure and its environment.
“An oil painting based on half of a paper study, working from photographic images of the Impenetrable rainforest of Bwindi, Uganda. Playing with translucent layering, I used experimental colours to depict the dancing leaves and light of this awe-inspiring, tropical environment.”
Diana's recent paintings depict dancing plants or people, morphing into or emerging from a landscape. Conveying movement, the pieces capture observed and abstracted fragments of light, atmospheric changes or physical gestures.
Whether inspired by a memory of a place or a photograph, the process of painting is a playful interpretation of spatial relations. Performing figures may be visible, or else the artist's perception of her surroundings may be the sole subject matter.
Diana graduated from Camberwell College of Arts. She was artist in residence at Trélex, Switzerland, in April 2018. Her work has been shown in the UK, Greece and Germany and is held in several private collections in the UK, US, Italy and Uganda.
Exhibitions include: Perpetual Shift, The Koppel Project, London 2019, Element.Void, The Icing Room, London 2019, Grow, Flow (solo show), Deptford Does Art Gallery, London 2018, Light and Structure, Deptford X Fringe 2017, Fragments Together (solo show), Peckham Pelican, London 2013.
