Studio Sale | Eva Ullrich

Eva Ullrich is a landscape painter who’s work leans towards abstraction. Her works are bold and confident yet emit an almost transcendental feeling of lightness and air, conveying form through delicate edges and tone. 

Born in the Lake District, Eva studied painting at The Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 2011, and continues to regularly exhibit her work regularly both in the UK and internationally.

She has always immersed herself in the landscapes which surround her, exploring rugged peaks and pristine beaches. More recently she has taken inspiration from research trips to remote locations in arctic Norway and Iceland and the very particular qualities of light that occur there.  

Using her experience of landscape as a starting point, Eva’s studio practice engages with the physical, experimenting with diverse and dynamic mark making. By working on a large scale the character of each mark is amplified. Layers of paint accumulate and translate into images referencing features in nature. Shapes and edges become hills, rock, cloud and water or alternate between one reading and another. The visual information is pared down to a minimum, allowing the work to breathe; fluid and expansive.

Her paintings offer a fleeting snapshot of the dynamic process of painting, which can be likened to the fragility of the rapidly disappearing landscapes that they represent. 

Ultimately she is interested in the comparison between this meditative space available to the viewer and being surrounded by nature itself.
