Studio Sale | Jo Evans
26 JUNE 2022 - 14 JULY 2022Notes
With her fabric collection as her paint box, Jo Evans, AKA 100 Hours, creates abstract art with textiles. She makes quiet, paintless paintings using beautiful natural fabrics and papers such as linen, silk and hemp, manipulating but also relinquishing control to the warp and weft. At first glance the work is minimal, almost flat but on closer inspection oozing texture and tone... and often a little wit.
She is drawn to methods of creation rooted in traditional techniques such as hand stitching, which is then married to a love of simple modern aesthetics, influenced by styles of the late nineteenth to the mid twentieth centuries. Every piece is one of a kind.
With an eye on sustainability, Jo uses only natural fibres, no toxic materials. All of her work is meticulously hand stitched and almost always improvised.
"I believe that art born of textiles has as much to give as a painting and can truly enhance our daily lives – you can feel its depth, its softness. Fabric has been on a journey and feels full of soul long before it has even gotten near to fulfilling its potential and l love that about this medium.”
From Cumbria and with ever itchy feet, Jo currently lives and works right on the cusp of Herts, Beds and Bucks.
