James Decent grew up in Sheffield bordering the Peak District, and studied architecture in Nottingham and London where he gained prizes for his design from the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects and was nominated for the RIBA President’s Medal. 

His work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions and competitions in the South Yorkshire region. 

River Swale is painted on location in the Yorkshire Dales. Decent captures the light and atmosphere of the scene with the readiness of quick oil painting. Using paint to express the immediacy of movement, light, and sense of space is an ongoing fascination and embodied in all his work.
