Terrence Higgins Trust, The Timed Auction 2021
18 FEBRUARY 2021 - 11 MARCH 2021Notes
"This painting was created as a response to the packed beaches of England during the 1st Lockdown of 2020, but I didn’t want to approach the concept as entirely negative. Instead I wanted to give a visual representation of the nostalgia we feel towards these places through the subtle charms they hold. The forms of beach huts help to remind us of the places we miss, and the places we can look forward to seeing once again.
This painting was created over the space of a few months in early summer 2020, the colour of the painting was reimagined and reapplied most days throughout this process as I aimed for the work to not ‘say too much’ but be a subtle hint at the simple beauty of these places we all know so well.
The painting was made in my ‘home studio’. In my practice I reimagine the most domestic and mundane of objects as if they were held in higher esteem. This has become a commentary on the often overlooked importance of everyday life. The somewhat disjointed nature between the paint, the image and myself, becomes apparent as I tend to subtract my own emotion from the painting, leaving the image to speak its own truth.
In recent years I have begun to reflect more deeply on the details of my everyday surroundings. The mundane became a symbol of daily ritual. A symbol I was then drawn to incorporate in my artwork as a glimpse of his everyday life as an artist.
