The Christmas Auction (60/72)

Notes

A poured painting that holds control and unpredictability in equilibrium.

Fintan Whelan luxuriantly pours pigment onto a blank canvas. Then tilting and moving the frame, he allows the colour to move across to create mesmerising patterns and swooshes.

In this game of chance, for every painting that is successful there are many that do not achieve this perfect balance. Only these successful paintings make it out of his studio, an old church organ factory in Germany.

"My way of working has become more meticulous through constantly adding or applying new materials like silk fibres or testing new techniques to push my process to its limits. This continuous experimentation is a key element to my new works."

The open ended nature of Fintan's work is something he takes pleasure in, imagining the viewer completes the work by adding to it their own experiences and vision.

Olha Stepanian's photography draws on the aesthetic of fashion photography and of Dada and Surrealist photography, like that of Man Ray and Claude Cahun. Her crisp black and white work are striking in their simplicity and bold in their composition and overall design. This comes from a process of sketching out her ideas before a photoshot.   “Every photograph is a separate story. I look for props and costumes among friends, though it’s easy to find clothes in thrift shops and alter them to fit the model (here my seamstress training comes in handy). I love details, and it is these details that sometimes give birth to an interesting storyline."
